From Search Engine Roundtable “What Do You Think of Google’s “I’m Feeling Lucky” Button?“:
In reality, I don’t think many people use that button nor do they see a point to it. (I’d love for Google to post their statistics on its usage!) Judging by the comments on the forum, some people have never even tried it.
The post goes on to mention a comment from one forum member who thought the button would work like StumbleUpon to pull up a random site.
The reference got me thinking about possible ways that Google could use the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button that might actually make the space useful.
- “Personalized Search” - would allow people to use personalized search selectively by either clicking the standard Google Search or Personalized Search button
- “Geographical Search” - would allow people to restrict their search to their current location (gleaned from IP address or pre-recorded Google data)
- “Extended Search” - would create Ask 3D-style results pulling from all of Google’s vertical search engines (the standard Google Search button would return text-only results)
- “Custom Button” - would allow users signed into their Google account to specify what type of search they’d like to assign to the button using a simple preference (Image Search, Local Search, Blog Search, etc). People would be able to put the search option they use the most right there on the front page
As is, just about anything would be more useful than “I’m Feeling Lucky”. I know very few people who 1) know what that is or 2) use it. But like Tamar at SERoundtable suggests, the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button may be more about branding than anything else (it’s become a staple of the Google start page… even if it doesn’t get used).
If you could change the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button into something else, what would you do with it?
