There’s a virtual “poostorm” erupting over comments made by Robert Scoble in regard to the SEO industry’s affect on search engines. In a couple of video posts to his blog, Scoble talks about a future in which sites like Mahalo, Techmeme, and Facebook overtake Google as the best places to find information online. I’ll be totally honest here - I couldn’t watch all three videos. Besides the fact that I’ve always thought that Robert Scoble was over-rated in his proficiency as a blogger, his argument in this instance has little to no valid backing. If he honestly thinks that Mahalo has any chance of becoming the dominant search player, he should probably have his meds adjusted. I don’t even think Mahalo would make that brazen a statement. But then… I don’t think Scoble really believes what he’s saying. I think he’s looking for some linkage and some attention (which he’s surely getting)… and it ends there. What better industry to get attention from than the SEO industry? Who has no problem getting ranked for search-related terms? The SEO industry. Are we all suckers for even responding to this? Probably a little. But by pointing out such ridiculousness, it further illustrates the need for the masses to find better sources of information than Robert Scoble. So I guess in a way it’s a win-win situation for us all! Wanna see the “poostorm” first hand? Check out Techmeme (and, in particular, Search Engine Land and SEOmoz’s take). Oh… and make sure to read the comments in most of these posts - that’s where the real reactions are taking place.

[…] Bob Warfield did a great write up on the topic (I recommend heading over there for some further insight) and of course there is some criticism of Scoble. […] Post a comment
