If you've ever wondered if Google was reading your blog, the answer is… possibly.  And I don't mean the Google crawler.  I mean actual folks at Google.  Apparently it's someone's job at the Googleplex, because the Inside AdWords blog has a post today in direct response to comments being made at other blogs around the internet.  The comments of concern to Google apparently center around the company's use of its own AdWords service to advertise Google services.

A representative from Google marketing has a rather lengthy quote assuring AdWords users that Google ads receive no special treatment within the service and that the same rules and algorithms apply to all ads, including Google's.  He goes on to say that Google's advertising department uses the exact same interface and the exact same guidelines that all other advertiser's use.

Google is proud of it's AdWords service, the representative states.  Therefore, in Google's opinion, it only makes sense to use the product internally as well.  The post concludes with reassurances from Google that the trust of its advertising partners is "paramount" and that it hopes to continue to have that trust.

You can't really blame Google for using its own service.  It works well for thousands of other advertisers, so why not?  As long as Google ads aren't given special treatment or priority, I think all's fair in true advertising.

May the best AdWords ad win.

Funny, somehow they come up #1 for a search on the word ’spreadsheet.’ That sure doesn’t seem to be accurate if they’re playing fair. :)

So I wandered over to Yahoo and tried ’spreadsheet’:
1) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spreadsheet
2) www.fi.edu/fellows/fellow4/may99/spreadsheet.html
3) www.j-walk.com/ss
4) acm.uva.es/p/v1/196.html
5) www.webopedia.com/TERM/s/spreadsheet.html

then MSN:
1) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spreadsheet
2) www.fi.edu/fellows/fellow4/may99/spreadsheet.html
3) www.google.com/googlespreadsheets/tour1.html
4) www.usd.edu/trio/tut/excel/1.html
5) www.irows.com
There were also 2 seperate links for spreadsheets.google.com mixed in with those that did not have additional info to go with them.

and finally Google:
1) docs.google.com/
2) www.google.com/googlespreadsheets/tour1.html
3) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spreadsheet
4) j-walk.com/ss/
5) www.openoffice.org/product/calc.html

Now, which of these are actually offering me a spreadsheet to use? How many people have posted a link to www.microsoft.com/Excel/ in the last year vs. all the web geeks who posted links to docs.google.com/ the very first second that they heard about it? How relevent is a webpage from May ‘99?
