The placement of advertising on your site is just as important as the ads themselves. Great ads in horrible places won't perform as well as they could. When trying to determine where to place advertisement on your site, it's sometimes hard to find a placement that integrates the ads without making them look like original content. Oh… but that's what you're going for, isn't it? The Inside AdSense blog has posted a reminder to all AdSense users that intentionally trying to lay out their ads with images to make the two look related is against the policy that governs the usage of their product. Ads can obviously be placed on pages that contain images. What Google is addressing with the post is the use of images to draw a correlation with the ad, like this example given on the Inside AdSense blog:
So remember to keep your ads and your images separate. And while the ultimate goal of any advertising layout is to make the ads as integral a part of your site as possible, don't go too far. The best guideline to use when dealing with advertising is this: is it obvious the ad is an ad? If not, you might appear to be engaging in deceptive practices. You don't want that, do you?
