According to ClickZ, social networking megasite MySpace has filed a lawsuit in a California U.S. District Court against Scott Richter and others for allegedly using the MySpace Bulletin service to spam users. According to the lawsuit, Richter, who has previously gained notoriety for his spamming tactics, and his colleagues collected MySpace user logins and passwords through phishing tactics. The alleged spammers then supposedly used computer software to log in to those accounts and send messages from the hijacked MySpace usernames. The lawsuit seeks to impose permanent injunctions against Richter and friends from ever using the MySpace service along with unspecified monetary damages. Neither MySpace nor the defendants were available to ClickZ for comment. Many in the industry are watching the developments of the lawsuit closely as it could likely be a prescient-setting ruling that would affect spamming, and in some regards marketing, on the growing number of social networking and user-generated content sites.
