The next time your site gets crawled by a major search engine, what will it find? New updates? Better keywords and meta tags? More linkage? As one web strategist found out, replacing navigation buttons and images with text links greatly improved his customer's Google ranking on a recent crawl. Images may look flashy and can make things stand out. But they also don't index as well in search engines as text links do. You can do amazing things with CSS and, as was the case with the above-mentioned example, most people won't even notice the change. But they'll notice the change in your search ranking. I've seen a site move up in ranking by 20 - 30 spots just from making a similar change. This is a great technique for bumping up your standing in the search engines by simplifying and streamlining. Look at the Internet Marketing Monitor. See any image links? I practice what I preach here. Plus, you get the added benefit of faster page-load times. In our instant gratification society, that's always a plus.

[…] Text links are the easiest for crawlers to read. Pictures, flash, drop-downs… they all look nice. But sending a crawler to a javascript or flash link is like trying to see through a one-way mirror: the links are invisible to crawlers. URL and directory structure is also commonly ignored. And, as SEOmoz points out, some major brands have multiple URLs pointing to the same content. Or multiple domains - one for every little whim. […] Post a comment
