If you've been following along I'm sure you've heard about the Google-MySpace-eBay situation.  MySpace has an agreement with Google for advertising.  MySpace wants to have an agreement with eBay.  But apparently Google doesn't like that idea.

LeeAnn Prescott over at Hitwise has published some numbers comparing not only the MySpace effect on both Google and eBay, but also some numbers comparing both company's forays into e-commerce.

According to Hitwise statistics, the eBay+PayPal combo receives more traffic, has longer sessions, and gets more of it's traffic from MySpace than the Google Base + Google Checkout combo (which is Google's e-commerce solution).  Prescott also posted several graphs which, among other things, show that Google Base receives less traffic than eBay, Live Expo (Microsoft's Craigslist competitor), and even Google's own Checkout service.

In addition, people spend more time at eBay than they spend at Google Base and Google Checkout combined.  Furthermore, session times at PayPal outrank Base and Checkout by almost 2 minutes.

I complete agree with Prescott's closing remarks, too:

Google needs to show that has an e-commerce offering that is even remotely competitive for it to have a say in eBay - MySpace discussions.

Obviously the numbers are there to support MySpace's interest in partnering with eBay instead of Google for e-commerce solutions.  While Google's advertising is hard to beat, eBay is obviously better at e-commerce.  I don't blame MySpace for wanting to develop top-notch partnerships.  MySpace has a lot at stake - namely a huge amount of traffic - and it should be looking to team up with the best of the best.

When it comes to e-commerce, that best of the best is not Google.  MySpace made a wise choice to partner with Google for advertising and search.  But they shouldn't hold their search and advertising dominance over other company's heads to try to pressure them into using other Google services that are not best of breed.

Hmm… it kind of reminds me of another company.  Ohh… what's their name?  That's right!

Microsoft.
