If you're looking for another way to take advantage of your existing RSS feed, Pheedo's new advertising widget might be an option to consider.  It's not really a new idea.  But it's new for Pheedo and they've mixed a social networking component into the mix.

The widget basically takes content from an RSS feed and turns it into an ad.  Let's say you have a website that sells push pins.  Your RSS feed, which contains news, updates, and announcements on the push pin industry, is fed into the widget.  Website owners using the widget would then see your content show up in the ad widget.  Readers of that website could click the "ad" to visit your site, email the article to a friend, or submit it to a number of social networking platforms.

So it's less of a traditional text advertising service and more about content sharing.  Advertisers pay to have their RSS feeds fed into the system. You can see examples of the widget on Pheedo's website (hit refresh to load up new examples.

Heather Green, at BusinessWeek.com, was contacted by FeedBurner after publishing a story on the Pheedo service and told that a similar service from FeedBurner had been available for a few months. Techmeme has been doing this for a while, too.  So like I said… it's not a new idea.

But I think it's further proof of something I said last week:  consumers are taking over control of traffic, advertising, and news online.  Social networking, which is a product of consumer demand, is integrating with advertising.  Advertising is moving out of the realm of true ad copy and in a more content-oriented direction… which is a product of consumer reaction to and interaction with traditional ads.  Sure… even traditional ads were created and modified over time to appeal to consumer demand.  But that demand is continuing to evolve the business into something outside of the old adscape.

Folks want information… not snappy PR & marketing hype.
