While perusing the WebmasterWorld forums I ran across a post about AdSense that caught my attention:

Reading all the bearish posts about AdSense lately would make it seem like the bottom is dropping out and nobody is on the upswing with AdSense. This would be incorrect because some of us are so busy improving our bottom line that we simply don't have time to relate all of those positive stories. Finally, I decided today looked as good a time as any to time to write a nice bullish post about AdSense, so you bears keep off this thread and post your tales of woe elsewhere, this one is for the bulls.

The author goes on to talk about the ways he was able to take his site (and his AdSense earnings) from 10,000 a readers several months ago to 700,000 and growing today.  It's one of the best articles about AdSense that I've read in a log time.  It makes you think.  And that is something we could all stand to do from time to time.

He offers up some pretty good suggestions and ideas, based on what worked for him:

  • Sell visitors on your site by explaining what it's about in a brief, one-sentence "mission statement"
  • Toss out the idea that there's a cap on your AdSense earnings potential
  • Expand beyond the confines of your typical content and branch into new, related directions
  • Reduce the amount of content on individual pages (such as fewer posts/page on blogs, etc).  Make each article or group of content stand on its own.
  • Replace the AdSense PSAs with an appropriate affiliate advertising option
  • Use your imagination to come up with new content and new ways of hooking visitors

Every site is a little different.  Something that works for this site might not work for yours.  But the ideas he suggests are not only great ways to simply improve a site (and thus, your traffic) but also an excellent way to increase AdSense earnings.  The more targeted, specific topics you give AdSense to index, the better.

I have to wonder something, though… How much could he improve his website earnings if he followed a John Chow-style of advertising and used a larger group of advertising sources?

i agree with your last statement
or maybe i dont agree since it was a question
but anyways:
i believe that your quoted persona was limiting himself, while speaking about not limiting yourself
you must not limit yourself to one source of revenue

“i believe that your quoted persona was limiting himself, while speaking about not limiting yourself”

You noticed that too, huh? Kind of an oxymoron…
