Yesterday we reported on the roll out of Google Click-to-Call for Google Map listings. The feature allows users to make free phone calls through Google to businesses that list with the service. In what could be a potential problem for Google, Garett Rogers points out how easy it would be to take advantage of the new feature to make free long distance calls and/or prank calls. I agree with Rogers. There may not be much Google can do to prevent this type of abuse… unless they have a monitoring system in place that tracks call usage. If so, listings that appear to be abusing the system could be removed. For now I think we'll just have to keep an eye on the feature. Hopefully a few abusers won't make the service unusable for the rest of us.
